Location

The neighborhood is bounded by West Florissant on the Northeast, Interstate 70 on the South, Riverview Boulevard on the East, and the city limits on the West.

Institutions

This neighborhood greatly benefits from the stabilizing institutions located in Walnut Park East. The Walnut Park Citizens Ad-Hoc Groups, the Kingshighway-Union-Bircher-Euclid Neighborhood Association, and the Riverview/West Florissant Housing corporation have been important stabilizing factors. The organizations have promoted housing development projects and are instrumental in helping revitalization efforts. The New Sunny Mount Baptist Church provides for the spiritual needs of the community and is well known for its Gospel music. Educational Institution, in particular the nearby Walbridge Caring Communities program is providing numerous services and programs to the area children and their families. The Walnut Park elementary school and Northwest Junior High School also provide good educational opportunities to the area's youth. The Hill Health Center and St. Louis Regional Ambulatory Health Center provides for accessible and affordable care of nearby residents.

Operation ConServ has established a community-based, not-for-profit housing corporation to assist with the housing development of the Mark Twain and Walnut Park neighborhoods. The housing corporation is working with real estate agents and banks to be able to acquire, redevelop and sell or rent affordable homes.

Characteristics

The neighborhood proximity to major thoroughfares and interstate and the availability of public transportation provide easy access to shopping, services, and employment opportunities. The housing in this neighborhood is a combination of brick and frame single-family dwellings. Most were build between 1900 and 1930 by German immigrants. In addition, the neighborhood is supported by several churches and community groups. The area is home to many young families. Residents throughout this neighborhood are working together to strengthen and build their community. In response to the housing development needed by the neighborhood, Operation ConServ has established a community-based, not-for-profit housing corporation. Many residents have formed block units providing the opportunity to meet and to discuss ways to improve the area's surroundings.
