Sheriff James W. Murphy was sworn in as St. Louis City Sheriff
on January 1, 1989. He was re-elected to that office in 1992, 1996,
2000 and 2004. Sheriff Murphy strives to make his Department an innovative
and dynamic agency.
James W. Murphy was elected Committeeperson of the Twelfth Ward in
1972, an office he still holds. He was a City Constable from 1974 to
1976. Jim was also elected to the Missouri Senate in 1976, and reelected
to that position in 1980.
When first elected Sheriff he attended the required St. Louis Sheriff's
Training Academy at the St. Louis Police Academy. Since becoming Sheriff
he has received Certificates of Training from the Institute of Police
Technology and Management, Missouri Police Chiefs Association, Missouri
Sheriff's Training Conferences and the National Sheriffs' Association
for the Management of Law Enforcement Agencies. Sheriff Murphy attended
the National Sheriff's Association Management Training Program at the
National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
On October 12, 1994 he was voted Missouri's Sheriff of the Year. Jim
was President of the Missouri
Sheriffs' Association in 2000 and presently serves on the Board
of Directors.
Jim has been married to his wife, Marilyn, for 45 years and has 5 children.
He is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, the Mary Ryder Home,
White House Retreat, the IHM Men's Club, and the Soccer Hall of Fame.
