Guidelines for Working in the Heat

  • Wear loose fitting, light weight and light colored clothing, preferably cotton or cotton blends. Wear a hat to protect the head from the sun.
  • Drink plenty of cool non-alcoholic beverages. Water is the most important, but additional beverages of choice ( tea, soda, "Gatorade," juice) are fine. Drink more than enough to satisfy thirst.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade - at least one 10 minute break every hour.
  • Do not add extra salt or potassium in the diet or by pills, unless a physician is consulted.
  • If you "brown bag" your lunch, refrigeration is essential. Sandwiches, salads, dairy products, etc., spoil rapidly in the heat and may make you ill.
  • Bathe or shower frequently in cool water.
  • Get plenty of rest in a cool environment when off duty.
  • Whenever possible, during heat warnings and alerts, adjust working hours for outdoor crews. Begin as early in the morning as feasible to avoid the heat of late afternoon.
