The Healthy Community Nutrition Education Initiative (HCNEI)

Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity or exercise every day.

Description of Program/Services Offered: This program is designed to increase the number of food stamp recipients who are aware of and practice healthful eating behaviors, by improving the nutrition environments in food stamp offices, schools, daycare centers, senior centers and communities.  The program is implemented through nutrition education interventions targeted to the food stamp clients and food stamp-eligible individuals. This program is funded through the USDA’s Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program component.

Program Activities: The program activities will center on the core elements of dietary quality, food security, food safety and shopping behaviors/food resource management.

Upcoming Activities: Watch for our activities in the local grade schools throughout the school year and our next Supermarket Festival in March 2004. We will also be holding nutrition education sessions with the Healthy Heart Coalition and our other partners in the food stamp office, senior centers, grade schools, day cares, farmers markets and other city locations. Come join us!
