Fire Department Repair Shop
The maintenance program includes a detailed Preventive Maintenance Program and repairs for fire suppression apparatus and medic units. The Repair Shop maintains all the fire department's generators, Hurst tools, rescue saws, water pumps and other specialized fire suppression equipment. The Support Services Program includes the ordering, storage and issuing of such items as: hose, nozzles, fire axes, pike poles, hand lights and other assorted tools and equipment. The Repair Shop also maintains and repairs these items. The firefighters from the Repair Shop respond with a Mobile Command Post to all major incidents the Fire Department responds to. When needed, the firefighters also respond with an air truck, heavy wrecker (pictured above), warming bus, additional hazardous material mitigation supplies or firefighting foam concentrate. Household supplies for all 30 engine houses are ordered, stored, issued and delivered by the Repair Shop. All of the household appliances at each engine house are the Repair Shop's responsibility to order, issue and maintain. The Repair Shop provides for the purchase and maintenance of all specialty items used by the Fire Department. This includes the areas of marine, diving, rappelling and rescue equipment, and tools. The Fire Department areas of responsibility have increased over the years, causing the Repair Shop to increase its duties as well. Rescue tools, water rescue equipment and medic unit repair are all new areas the Repair Shop has had to learn to troubleshoot and maintain. Even fire apparatus technology is constantly changing. A fire apparatus is a compilation of several extensive and detailed systems comprised of a power plant, hydraulic system, pneumatic system, water pumping system, and a very complex electronic system. Mechanics must continually use their knowledge and experience to repair each system on several different makes of apparatus.
